To select the right water purifier is a tough job, as it has a lot of variety. It is important to select right as it involves ensuring good health and well-being of family. Now which one to select is a question, so don’t worry I will tell you the type of water purifiers and their specifications. Analyze your daily water consumption to understand the necessary capacity of your water purifier. For perfect purifier one needs to check type of purification technology, storage capacity, additional safety features and service & maintenance. Above are the classifications of water purifiers on the basis of purification technology.

Different Type Of Water Purifier

Meaning Of Reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers

Reverse osmosis is a water purification process in water purifiers. It removes ions and unwanted molecules from drinking water. RO water purifier comes in a combination of pre-filter, carbon filter, RO membrane, UF membrane, and post-carbon filter. Pre-filter helps exclude particles such as silt, dirt and chemicals from water. It protects the RO membrane that gets clogged as a result of exposure to sediment and chlorine. It efficiently gets rid of organic compounds but does not remove chlorine. An excellent example of such type is Kent RO purifier. The name itself mentions RO in it.

Meaning Of Ultraviolet (UV) water purifiers

UV water purifiers have capacity of destroying 99.99% of harmful pathogens. It does not change the taste of water. It also kills a wide range of microorganisms that are resistant to chlorination. The water passes through a section that contains a UV lamp and this is where the disinfection is done. As the water flows all the harmful microorganisms get a dose of UV light (254 nm wavelengths). This light attacks their DNA so that reproduction can be prevented. The flow rate of UV water purifiers is generally around 1-2 liter/minute. It differs from brand to brand. Few brands such as Eureka, Kent and HUl have a wide range of water purifiers with UV systems. However disadvantage is it can only deactivate the living microorganisms but do not get rid of it.

Meaning Of Ultra filtration (UF) water purifiers

It is a membrane filtration process similar to reverse osmosis only difference is it uses hydrostatic pressure to force water through a semi permeable membrane. It suspends solid substances and harmful particles. Ultra filtration has the ability to retain large size molecules. UF is ideal for the removal of colloids, bacteria and pathogens. It does not use chemicals (coagulants, flocculates, disinfectants, pH adjustment to treat water

Meaning Of Activated Carbon Filter

It uses carbon to decontaminate water. Water enters the filtration system, passes through the active carbon, undergoes adsorption, and leaves the water purified. Carbon is a natural filter that adds nothing to water and improves the taste of it. The activated carbon works to prevent larger impure particles like dust and germs. However, it does not remove chlorine and dissolved inorganic chemicals. To make water clean, carbon should be in contact with water for a longer period. So activated carbon filters are not solely used. It is found in any water filter system be it a reverse osmosis system or UV system.

Meaning of Sediment filter

Sediment means settling down. In this process, the particulate matter is deposited as a layer of solid particles at bottom of a body of water. Water that has a high sediment level can change the aesthetic value of it. Sediment filters are rated by a “micron” number. This means the particle size that will be trapped by the filter. Sediment can cause blockages in the strainers because of the settle matter. Though it has simpler operations, it cannot remove chemicals or kill microorganisms. So think and buy care for your family.
